Ja Morant, returning from a 25-game suspension by the NBA, played a pivotal role in the Memphis Grizzlies‘ 115-113 away win against the New Orleans Pelicans. Since his comeback, the Grizzlies have clinched back-to-back victories, the first time since their wins against the Utah Jazz and the Dallas Mavericks on the 30th of November and 2nd of December, respectively.
Nevertheless, Rasheed Wallace, former NBA basketball player and coach, is not willing to let Morant off the hook just yet. The Grizzlies superstar drew the ire of the basketball community when he exhibited reckless behavior by flashing a gun in public, leading to his suspension by the league.
Discussing the matter on the program “Underdog NBA,” Rasheed shared his candid opinion about Morant when prompted by the host, Tyler.
He only got 25 because he is who he is in my opinion. It was a d***head move. You told us after the first incident of the pistol, or actually the cap gun, you talking about you learned your lesson, you sorry to your fans, the league, this and that, you’re willing to take any punishment.
He further continued:
Alright, and what happened a couple days later? You back on there with an even smaller cap gun, and you got a 25, talking about you doing it. I blame his homies too. All three of them was d***heads, because somebody should have spoke up.
Upon his return, Morant has demonstrated to the league and the Grizzlies the extent of his absence as they seek to recover from their early-season challenges. In just two games played, Morant boasts impressive averages of 27 points, 5.5 rebounds, 8 assists, and a 47.5% field goal percentage, all achieved in an average game time of 34.5 minutes.
How good has Ja Morant been for the Grizzlies?
The Memphis Grizzlies had a dismal start to the 2023 NBA season, enduring six consecutive losses. Their pre-season performance was equally disappointing, losing all three games.
This unexpected form contrasts sharply with the team’s achievement of finishing second in the NBA Western Conference standings last season, concluding with a commendable 51-31 record. The downturn in performance is largely attributed to the 25-game suspension of their star player and the 2019 NBA draft second overall pick, Ja Morant.
In his two games back from suspension, facing the New Orleans Pelicans and the Indiana Pacers, he showcased his impact by contributing 34 points, 6 rebounds, and 8 assists in the first game and 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 8 assists in the second. Impressively, he achieved a shooting accuracy of 12/24 and 7/16 from the field in the respective games.
Despite the challenging record of 8-19 this season, placing them at the 13th spot on the table, there remains hope for the Memphis Grizzlies to secure at least a spot in the NBA Promotion Playoffs.
However, the key to their aspirations lies in Morant staying focused and avoiding making any reckless decisions moving forward. The upcoming game will be away at the State Farm Arena, where they are set to face the Atlanta Hawks.
