Ray Allen and LeBron James have an interesting history. They won a championship together in 2013, when the two were with the Miami Heat. The spent the previous four seasons battling out it for supremacy in the Eastern Conference with Allen on the Celtics and James on the Cleveland Cavaliers first and then the Miami Heat.

While they say that greatness is best appreciated up close, it appears this is not the case this time.

Recently, in an interview, Allen was asked his all-time top 5, and who he would have as a 6th man. James, who was Allen’s teammate was not in the starting 5 and was instead named 6th man by Allen. This comes as a shock to many since James is often considered at least Top 2 all time. While James may not be everyone’s GOAT, the vast majority of people agree that he is at least top 5 and his exclusion has baffled many.

Allen was quoted saying, “With a sixth man? Michael Jordan, Magic (Johnson), Larry (Bird), Shaq (O’Neal), and Hakeem Olajuwon. Sixth man? It would be, I would say LeBron.”

While some might find James’ exclusion shocking, seeing the rest of the list justifies it. All in Allen’s list are certified legends of the game, and most are players that James grew up watching. Allen has notably not named any players from the recent era, so James’ exclusion might not be that much of an outlier.

Ray Allen’s impact on the game

Allen was one of the greatest shooters of his time. In fact he was one of the best to ever do it. He was the leader in 3-points made in the NBA until Stephen Curry passed him.

Allen was one of the first to consistently knock down the long ball jumpers. He was one of the few who regularized the usage of the three-point shot before it became the norm. He was also very efficient while doing it.

His time with the Celtics cemented his place as an NBA legend. Fans often look back at him fondly for his game tying 3 against the San Antonio Spurs during his time with the Miami Heat in the 2013 NBA finals. With the Spurs all set to win the match and the series, Allen knocked down a corner three to level the game which Miami eventually went on to win.
