Austin Reaves has been a revelation for the Los Angeles Lakers this season. The second-year guard from Oklahoma has gone from undrafted to indispensable, carving out a key role on a championship contender.
Reaves has averaged 13 points, three rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game while shooting 52.9 percent from the field and 39.8 percent from three-point range. He has shown his versatility, efficiency, and toughness, as well as his ability to play alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
But Reaves took his game to another level on Sunday, when he scored 23 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, to help the Lakers defeat the Memphis Grizzlies 128-112 in Game 1 of their first-round series. Reaves was clutch down the stretch, hitting big shots and making plays on both ends of the court. He also showed his confidence and swagger, shouting “I’m him” at the Lakers bench after a three-pointer.
Reaves’ performance did not go unnoticed by NBA fans and analysts, who praised his poise and skill. Some even suggested that Reaves deserves a lucrative contract extension this summer when he will become a restricted free agent.
One of them was Andy Larsen, a Utah Jazz insider, and reporter for The Salt Lake Tribune. He tweeted that Reaves is worth the Gilbert Arenas max, which is a four-year, $99 million contract that can be offered to players with less than three years of service time. “I think Austin Reaves is worth the Gilbert Arenas max… about 4-year, $99M.” Larsen wrote on Twitter.

Jazz insider’s valuation of Austin Reaves has NBA fans in disbelief
Larsen’s tweet about Reaves’ value sparked a lot of reactions from NBA fans on Twitter. Some agreed with his assessment, while others thought he was exaggerating or joking. Here are some of the tweets from NBA fans:
While Larsen’s tweet was likely meant to be hyperbolic and humorous, it does raise an interesting question: how much is Reaves really worth in free agency?
Reaves has certainly proven himself as a valuable role player for the Lakers, who are looking to repeat as champions this year. He has shown potential and upside as a player who can fit in any system and play with any star.
However, Reaves is still relatively unproven in the league, having played only one full season and one playoff game. He also plays on a stacked team that features two superstars and several veterans who take a lot of pressure off him. It is unclear how he would fare on a different team or in a larger role.
