In a recent candid conversation with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson on the final episode of Scoop B Selects, Antoine Carr, a former Utah Jazz player, shared his perspective on the controversial ending to the 1998 NBA Finals.
Carr believed that the Chicago Bulls‘ victory, led by Michael Jordan, involved more luck and favorable refereeing than many people realize.
Carr stated about the infamous “push off” incident in game 6 involving Jordan and Bryon Russell, “I would say that there was a little bit of a push off there.” Carr added, “If it hadn’t been for the referees, we would’ve won this.”
Carr also revealed some intriguing details about Jordan’s psychological tactics during games. According to him, Jordan used to give a “certain look,” dubbed the “Get You Look,” indicating his intention to dominate the opponent. Alongside Scottie Pippen, Jordan utilized various mind games to confuse the opposition, a strategy that undoubtedly contributed to the Bulls’ many victories.

Shaquille O’Neal and Greg Ostertag’s heated exchange
In addition to remembering the 1998 finals, Carr recalled a famous fight between NBA legends Shaquille O’Neal and Greg Ostertag that he personally witnessed. According to Carr, the altercation occurred in the corridor after practice when Ostertag appeared to irritate O’Neal with his comments about playing against him.
Carr illustrated the subsequent encounter vividly, noting O’Neal’s aggressive response, which included a backhand to Ostertag. Despite the tense atmosphere, Ostertag chose not to retaliate immediately, although some of their teammates urged him to defend himself.
Carr described the scene, “We were actually walking back from practice going through the back area to the locker room in the hallway, and that’s where ‘it’ happened. Did he fall down? Yeah. Did he get up? Yeah… eventually.”
The incident showcases the highly competitive nature and the intense atmosphere surrounding the players during that era, giving fans a glimpse behind the scenes of the tough encounters and rivalries that have shaped the league’s history.
