Report: Chris Paul wants Phoenix Suns to pursue Carmelo Anthony
Chris Paul wants the Suns to trade for Carmelo Anthony and go all out for the NBA championship this season
Carmelo Anthony
Chris Paul is a legend of the league but he still does not have an NBA title to his name. However, all of that can change this year with the addition of Kevin Durant to the Phoenix Suns. The Slim Reaper was traded to the Suns after Kyrie Irving also parted ways a few days earlier. Despite securing a future Hall of Famer in Kevin Durant, Chris Paul wants one more star and that’s Carmelo Anthony.
Chris Paul and Melo were drafted just 2 years apart and have been good friends throughout their time in the league. They got close during their time with Team USA during the 2008 Olympics and also played together for the Houston Rockets. Carmelo Anthony is also a future Hall of Famer without a ring just like Chris Paul. Melo however is in the top 10 all-time NBA scoring list which is no small feat. Anthony joining this team already stacked with Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, and Devin Booker will look certainly scary on paper.
Carmelo Anthony has been a free agent since July when the Lakers released him. Melo did not receive any trade interest as he is 38 years old but still has the making of a solid role player. The veteran averaged 13 points in 26 minutes last season shooting a healthy 37.5% from 3. With the Phoenix Suns needing depth after giving up role players for KD, Melo could be the perfect solution.
Carmelo Anthony would be joining a team that is going all out for a title
The Phoenix Suns championship window is closing with every passing season and this time it feels like the last straw. After an embarrassing exit to the Dallas Mavericks in last year’s playoffs, the fans in The Valley have not been pleased. Despite making the finals in 2021, the Suns have failed to improve on that and have disgruntled their former #1 pick DeAndre Ayton. Ayton signed a 30 million/year contract with Phoenix but has not been performing near that level this season.
It looks like it truly is ‘now or never’ for Phoenix as Chris Paul is getting old, and Booker is young but would not be afraid to leave if things go awry in Phoenix. Then comes Kevin Durant. The new centerpiece of this huge Texas puzzle has skyrocketed their title odds from 17/1 to 6/1. KD is joining a team that won 60 games the previous year just like he did when he joined the Warriors in 2016.
This Suns squad is already championship material and adding KD to that might just be unfair. However, everyone had the same thing to say about the Brooklyn Nets, and look at how they ended up. Managing these many All-stars is always hard as egos tend to get in the way. If Phoenix ends up adding Melo to this squad they will surely be the favorites to make it out of the West.
