The Utah Jazz announced this Sunday afternoon that head coach Quin Snyder is stepping down after eight seasons as head coach. Utah Jazz owner, Ryan Smith confirmed the news of Snyder’s surprising departure shortly after ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported he planned to step down. Snyder, 55 now, recently led Utah to a 49–33 record and trip to the postseason, which ended in six games against the Mavericks. Snyder’s reign started in 2014 when he took over a team that had a 25-57 record the previous year. Snyder managed to improve the team and took them to the Playoffs for six straight seasons, the longest active streak in the league. The main issue was the lack of progress in the Playoffs, as the Jazz didn’t make it beyond the second round in Snyder’s coaching reign.

Quin Snyder is one of the biggest names in the modern era that come to mind. His resume speaks for itself as he has transformed a disgruntled Utah side, to one of the best regular season teams. He has elevated certain players once they put on a Jazz uniform. Despite being one of the best regular-season teams in the league the Jazz have often come up short in the playoffs, oftentimes in an ugly fashion. The team has never made it past the second round of the playoffs and Snyder has a losing record as a head coach.

Snyder spent one season as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2011-12 season. He then spent a season with CSKA Moscow as an assistant, a year with the Hawks as an assistant and has been the head coach of the Jazz since 2014.Snyder coached the Jazz to a 372-264 record in the regular season. The team finished with the best record in the league in 2020-21. In six playoff appearances, Snyder had a 21-30 record with three first-round exits in the last four years.

Quin Snyder has embodied what Jazz basketball is for the last eight years. The tireless work ethic and attention to detail Quin displayed each day is a testament to the professional he is. I have nothing but admiration for Quin and respect his decision. On behalf of Ashley and I along with our ownership group and our entire organization, we thank Quin and Amy from the bottom of our hearts for all of their contributions to the state of Utah and the Jazz and wish them nothing but the best.” Jazz owner Ryan Smith said in a statement.

“I am incredibly grateful to have spent the last eight years with such a respected and historic organization and in the beautiful, kind, supportive community of Salt Lake City. At the core, and what drives me every day is our players and their passion for the game, their desire to constantly work to improve and their dedication to the team and the Jazz. I strongly feel they need a new voice to continue to evolve. That’s it. No philosophical differences, no other reason. After eight years, I just feel it is time to move onward.” an emotional Snyder bid adieu to Utah, after years of handwork on making a functional team

Snyder will undergo hip surgery this off-season and there is a possibility that Snyder will enter the coaching market in 2023 and take a season-long sabbatical after eight grueling years with Utah Jazz. Snyder is one of the most well-respected coaches in the league, and would be a highly coveted candidate for another heading coaching job. He was one of the favorites to coach the Lakers, but that vacancy has been filled up by Darvin Ham, probably the Charlotte Hornets will be looking at him as a perfect head coach for the coming seasons. For Utah, it will now begin its search for a new head coach amid what was already expected to be a pivotal offseason for the team.
