In an open discussion with co-host Channing Frye on the “Road Trippin” podcast, Richard Jefferson disclosed that he would be more scared of Paul Pierce than of Miami Heat veteran Dwyane Wade in crucial scenarios.
“Ball in the hands for a last-second shot, I would probably fear Paul Pierce more than D-Wade,” Jefferson said. He clarified he wasn’t explicitly pointing towards a three-point scenario but emphasized, “Down by one, I need a two. Down by two, I need a three, y’know, tie game. I’m taking Paul Pierce in that situation over D-Wade.”
Although many people might find this surprising, Pierce’s track record speaks for itself. Throughout his illustrious career with the Boston Celtics, he was known for his ability to step up when the stakes were high. His remarkable performance in helping the Celtics win the 2008 championship proves his ability.
By the time he retired, Pierce had made seven game-winning buzzer-beaters, surpassing NBA legends like Kevin Garnett and Wade, who had made five.
However, Wade’s trajectory took a turn when he paired up with LeBron James. Wade, once the undisputed leader of the Heat, decided to follow James, which caused many to think of him as a sidekick during this time in his career. This partnership undoubtedly brought success to the team, but Wade’s role as the team’s ‘alpha’ was overshadowed by James’ commanding presence.
