“You don’t keep a Ferrari in the garage for an entire year and then put it in race” Richard Jefferson supports the Pelicans’ idea of holding onto ‘hurt’ Zion Williamson in the playoffs

Zion Williamson and Richard Jefferson

Richard Jefferson is one of not so many people around the league that agree with the New Orleans Pelicans’ idea of holding down Zion Williamson. He himself is a former NBA player who now is an analyst at ESPN. The New Orleans Pelicans had a very disappointing start during the regular season but till the end, they were able to bounce back and return on track by winning the play-in tournament without their franchise star Zion Williamson they made it to the playoffs. Not many believed in the team as they were missing their primary guy and later didn’t let him play in but proving all wrong they made it and ended their season knowing their potential and talent without the main guy. Richard Jefferson also thinks the same as at the end, the season is no more disappointing as they strived back trying to get the job done.

In the first-round series of the playoffs the New Orleans Pelicans faced the Devin Booker and Chris Paul led Phoenix Suns. It was an interesting series the Pelicans were able to force a Game 6 but unfortunately had to call it a wrap after it. As Devin Booker returning from his hamstring injury stepped up and closed the curtains on the Zion Williamson less New Orleans Pelicans with the score of 4-2. Every game played in the series was closely contested and head to head as both the ends had the potential to win it all and even the young guns of Pelicans like Jose Alvarado were outplaying the veterans at the other end so their team can add a dub.

Many Pelicans fans and analysts around the league believe the season for them would still have been alive if they had Zion playing against the Phoenix Suns. A potential return would have surely changed around the whole narrative but the management and coaching staff even after medical clearance didn’t let Zion Williamson get on the board and hoop around even though he himself wanted to play. As he never left an opportunity to showcase his bounce and heroics on the floor via pre-game warm-ups and his Instagram stories. Richard Jefferson though has a totally different take on the Pelicans’ decision of letting their main guy rest throughout.

Richard Jefferson discussing Zion Williamson’s willingness to resign with the franchise with an extension and their decision of holding him down this season quoted: “I think they did exactly what they were supposed to do, you want to hold him out. You don’t keep a Ferrari in the garage for an entire year and then go put it in a race. And that’s what it was going against the Phoenix Suns, going against that, you don’t want to put a player in that position because obviously he’s not tuned up. We’ve seen injuries to Booker. We’ve seen injuries to Khris Middleton and these are guys that were tuned up ready to go during the season and then just things happen.”

Further, Richard Jefferson also threw some shade at Zion as he mentioned that if he isn’t in the conversation after 2 to 3 years while being at New Orleans even the fans won’t want him there. But whatever he said around the topic isn’t wrong at all as Zion Williamson is really an injury-prone player as of now due to him being out of shape and having the lower body at threat. But soon the New Orleans Pelicans will be one of the best teams in the league as their line-up in the coming season is going to be great and adding to it will be a young and deep bench something everyone likes to rely on.
