Twenty years ago today, one of the worst incidents in NBA history took place in Detroit. It brought negative attention not only to Midwest clubs but the whole league. An aggressive rant led to several injuries, fines, bans, and suspensions from the sports industry. It brought new regulations to the NBA and heightened focus on player and fan safety. They perceived it as a violent night at the time. Everyone called it “The Malice in the Palace.” Where Ron Artest was the man who suffered the most.

Re-matching the Eastern Conference Finals from the previous season, the game was anticipated to be rough at the Palace of Auburn Hills in suburban Detroit. When Ron Artest fouled Detroit’s Ben Wallace with about 46 seconds remaining and Indiana was leading 97-82, Wallace shoved Artest, causing players and coaches from both teams to square up on the court. Artest laid down on the scorers’ table to calm down. Next, a supporter threw a beer cup and struck Artest.
