RUMOR: Miami Heat show interest in pursuing former 6x All-Star
Kyle Lowry with Miami Heat team
The word going around in the league is that the Miami Heat are interested in signing a 2009’s No.1 pick overall who currently is a free agent after his last two season with the nets. The player in question is 6-time all-star Blake Griffin who is one of the remaining big stars unsigned to a team yet.
Brett Siegel from Sports Illustrated suggests that Griffin’s impact on both ends of the court has seen him gain attention from the organization. With the Heat lacking depth in the Power Forward position, this could be a good pick-up for the team. Siegel wrote in his column that Blake’s instinct for defence and understanding of the game has garnered attention from the Heat, along with his ability to take charges and stretch the floor offensively makes him an intriguing bench option.
Will Miami Heat pursue Blake Griffin?
The Miami Heat at the moment have an open spot on their roster with no true option for a power forward. Players like Bam Adebayo or Dewayne Dedmon serve as true centers and which leads to Jimmy Butler and rookie Nicola Jovic as only players to fill up the position.
With PJ Tucker relocated to Philly, if Blake Griffin were to join the squad he could see himself as starter, but with the size disadvantage playing the four position he may need to adjust to playing the small forward position. Defence is the Heat’s strength, and while Blake Griffin’s stamina won’t allow him more than 20 minutes of play on the court at once, he can supply a burst of energy coming off the bench.
The early 2010s were Blake Griffin’s best years, drafted no.1 overall in 2009, he quickly rose to stardom thanks to his athleticism and vertical jump. He was an all-star for the first five seasons he played and was known for his powerful and highlight-worthy dunks. While knee-injuries have tremendously derailed the player’s potential, he has reinvented himself into a role player with deep understanding of the game being a veteran. Keeping in mind, the value that Griffin can bring to the court, the Heat should look towards the possibility of signing the Forward.
