The inception of the Curry-Ionescu shootout challenge traces back to Ionescu’s stellar performance at the WNBA All-Star 2023, where she dazzled spectators by notching 37 points out of a possible 40 in the final round of the STARRY WNBA 3-Point Contest, setting a new WNBA and NBA single-round event record.

Fueling the anticipation for their impending matchup, Ionescu teased the idea of challenging Curry following her remarkable win, which garnered Curry’s interest. The idea gained traction during the Golden State Warriors clash against the Sacramento Kings on January 25th, where Ionescu enthusiastically accepted the challenge.
