There’s a new sheriff in town in California. The mighty Los Angeles Lakers and the dynastic Golden State Warriors have made way this season for the crowning of the Sacramento Kings. The same Sacramento Kings who currently have the longest active playoff drought in major American sports leagues. They have never even been to the NBA Finals as compared to the 18-time champion Lakers and winners of 4 of the last 8 championships in the Warriors.

Well, now, they are the Sacramento Kings who sit third in the Western Conference. There was silent optimism around the Kings’ roster pre-season but no one foresaw what they are doing at the moment. Sacramento has won 7 out of their last 10 and their last 6 in a row which is the second longest active win streak in the west behind only the Denver Nuggets.

The Kings’ offense is electric and fun to watch. Whether it is De’Aaron Fox being a master in the pick and roll, Kevin Huerter running off screens to drain jumpers, Domantas Sabonis’ excellent playmaking out of the post, or Keegan Murray’s all-around smooth game. The offense is humming along and dragging the team with it. At the moment, Sacramento is the third-best offense in the league, trailing only Denver and Boston.

Kings fans have reason to be optimistic about this team. Memphis and Denver are already 4.5 and 6 games ahead of the Kings respectively, but the fight for homecourt in the playoffs is for real. If they secure the #3 seed then who knows, maybe they can finally end the curse of having never been in the NBA finals.

Unlikely heroes are at the heart of an unlikely story. Domantas Sabonis was discarded by the Indiana Pacers as they looked to retool their roster despite being the lone all-star. De’Aaron Fox had become almost an afterthought amongst the up-and-coming young stars of the league. Now? they are “THE” guys on the third-best team in the Western Conference.

Fox is one of the best clutch-time players in the league this season and Sabonis is a double-double machine. Together, they have made for one of the deadliest offensive duos in the league. The Sacramento Kings have arrived folks, and now it’s high time that all of us ‘Light The Beam’.
