The San Antonio Spurs have been a model of excellence and consistency in the NBA for over two decades, winning five titles and making the playoffs every year from 1998 to 2019. But after missing the postseason since then, they needed a spark to reignite their fire.

They got it on Tuesday night, when they won the 2023 NBA draft lottery and secured the No. 1 overall pick. That means they will likely draft Victor Wembanyama, a 7’3″ phenom from France who is widely regarded as the best prospect since LeBron James.

Wembanyama is a freak of nature who can do it all on the court. He can shoot threes, dribble, pass, rebound, block shots and guard any position. He has been dominating the European leagues and has drawn comparisons to Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

“It’s going to be unbelievable,” Spurs owner Peter J. Holt said Tuesday night. “Our future was already bright, now it’s going to be through the moon.”

The Spurs, along with the Detroit Pistons and Houston Rockets, had the highest lottery odds at 14% and hit the jackpot with the top pick. They edged out the Charlotte Hornets, Portland Trail Blazers and the Houston Rockets, who got the second, third and fourth picks, respectively.

Spurs fans celebrate their lottery win on social media

The Spurs’ lottery win sent their fans into a frenzy on social media. Many of them shared their excitement and disbelief with memes and gifs of Wembanyama dominating his opponents or celebrating with Popovich. Others thanked the basketball gods for blessing the Spurs with patience and loyalty. Some even predicted that Wembanyama would lead the Spurs to multiple rings and become an MVP candidate.

The NBA Draft will take place on June 22nd at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The Spurs will have an opportunity to make history by adding Wembanyama to their squad. The rest of the league should be very scared.
