Former NBA team Seattle Sonics player Ruben Patterson was charged with third-degree rape of his family’s nanny. This incident happened way back in 2000. Seattle Sonics was a part of the NBA league from 1967 until 2008.

Sonics CEO and president Wally Walker had announced that the team would punish Patterson, a free agent, by July 1 if he returned to the team next season. The punishment would be a fine and suspension for several games without salary. Wally quoted, “As an organization, any legal situation regarding an employee, including Sonics and Storm players, is treated very seriously,” Walker said in a statement. “We will take disciplinary action a priority as per our company’s policies and guidelines regarding any employee’s violation of the law.” He added, “When we first learned of this investigation, we decided not to speak publicly about it. Like the police and prosecuting attorney, we did not want to say anything that could have interfered with a fair trial. Ruben’s decision to plead guilty ends that risk.”

25-year-old Patterson was accused of attempting to engage in sexual intercourse with his family’s nanny on Sept. 25, 2000, in his Bellevue home. Ruben’s attorney, John Wolfe, had stated that Patterson entered a modified guilty plea known as an Alford plea, wherein a defendant does not admit guilt but agrees there may be sufficient evidence for a jury to convict him. The punishment for attempted third-degree rape was one year in jail and a $5,000 fine back then.

The prosecutor conducted an investigation that stated all the details of the incident. The nanny was hired in January 2000 to help look after Patterson’s two children, aged 1 and 7, and Patterson’s 13-year-old stepbrother. The charge sheet stated that on the night of Sept. 25, the nanny was in Ruben’s home as his wife was scheduled to undergo minor elective surgery in a local hospital. The nanny spent the night looking after the children.

Later, the nanny went to Patterson’s room just before midnight to check on his 14-month-old daughter. She then saw Patterson standing naked near the television set and turned to leave. Ruben allegedly followed the nanny, wrapped his arms around her, and said, “Come on … let’s do it.” The nanny refused as she insisted that his wife was her best friend. He then picked up the nanny and carried her into a media room.

Shortly after, Patterson fell into a sitting position on the couch while the nanny landed on the floor directly in front of him. He then forced the nanny to perform a s**ual act as she continued to refrain. Ruben then left the room and told her everything would be okay if she didn’t tell anyone. The nanny stayed back as she was afraid and frightened and later reported the attack on sept. 29 to Issaquah police. Patterson then received a six-month suspended sentence and six months’ probation was fined $1,000, and was ordered to provide 80 hours of community service.
