Once an NBA player himself, Sebastian Telfair watched another star, Ja Morant, go through what he did in the NBA. In a heart-to-heart interview on VladTV, Telfair talks about his own brush with the law, the incident at Boston’s Logan Airport with a gun. It’s clear: he feels for Morant.

This story isn’t new in the NBA, but it keeps repeating. Flashback to 2006. Telfair, a trailBlazer back then, finds himself in hot water. A loaded gun, belonging to his girlfriend, ends up on the team’s plane near his pillowcase. What follows? A fine and a two-game suspension. The incident violated the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement which prohibits players from possessing a firearm while traveling on team or league business.

Sebastian Telfair had this to say on VladTV about the whole Ja Morant gun incident:

It wasn't like a police type of thing. It was more me dealing with the NBA... When Ja Morant was getting in trouble, I was embarrassed, cuz the pots already pissed in for him... It's like being young and making wrong decisions.

Ja Morant’s suspension came after a series of incidents involving firearms, including a viral video where he brandished a gun. The NBA’s decision was a 25-game suspension. This was seen as a firm statement on how they handle players and their conduct off-court as well.

Telfair also talked about how incidents like these affect the environment around a player as experienced by him and Gilbert Arena. They could feel the energy change around them in the arenas and the locker room.

Ja Morant: suspended, returned, and went out again with a bang

Despite the controversy, Morant made a triumphant return, earning Western Conference Player of the Week honors. In his return game, he scored 34 points against the New Orleans Pelicans, including the game-winner. He then went on to go 3-0, and a few games later dunked on rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama.

However, this season is for sure a cursed one for Ja Morant, as he is ruled out from the rest of the season owing to a shoulder injury. The injury, a tear in the labrum, is a big blow for Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies. The team, already struggling without him, now has to figure out the rest of the season minus their main guy.

The Grizzlies’ ups and downs during Morant’s suspension, and now his injury, really show how much they rely on him. It’s impressive for the 24-year-old star to have a whole franchise counting on him for success in the highly competitive NBA. The whole NBA community is hoping for a complete recovery and is eager to see the young star in action again.
