Former Senior Democratic Party leader Tulsi Gabbard attacked Vice President Kamala Harris with “hypocrisy” over the effort to return WNBA player Brittney Griner. Since February 17, Griner, a two-time U.S. Olympic champion and eight-time all-star with the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA, has been held in Russia after authorities at the airport in Moscow claimed to have discovered vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage. This Monday, a Russian court sentenced Griner to 9 years in jail. US authorities, including Harris, who stated that she was attempting to obtain Griner’s release, strongly opposed the judgement.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken made an uncommon move last week when he called with Sergey Lavrov of Russia’s foreign ministry to urge him to accept a settlement that would see Griner and Paul Whelan, an American imprisoned in Russia on espionage accusations, released. Even though Harris is a California attorney, Gabbard, a former presidential candidate and vice chairperson of the Democratic National Committee, said that Harris had worked to keep people convicted of similar offences in jail for longer than their sentences and she finds Harris’ to be a hypocrite.
Brittney Griner situation worsened as of lately
When Brittney Griner was nabbed at Sheremetyevo International Airport on February 17, she had been arrested by Russian officials on suspicion of having prohibited vape cartridges filled with marijuana oil. In order to increase her income and keep up with her game, Griner plays basketball overseas during the WNBA offseason summer. When Griner was detained, she was playing for UMMC Ekaterinburg in the Russian Women’s Basketball Premier League. Griner claimed to have a prescription for the cannabis oil from her doctor and to have packed quickly, but she said she had no clue how it got into her suitcase.
When it comes to pursuing marijuana offences, Gabbard said, Harris is giving the message that the wealthy and powerful in this country will be treated differently than regular Americans. The thing that struck Gabbard about Harris’ tweet, she said, is that Harris and her government has not shown the same sympathy for persons charged of marijuana offences domestically.
Despite Harris serving as California’s attorney general, more than 1,900 men and women were imprisoned for cannabis-related charges, according to a research. In her response to Harris’s comments, Gabbard emphasized that she opposed the imprisonment of marijuana offenders and attacked the immoral impact that the hypocrisy is having on her.
Harris and Tulsi had already had a conversation. As previously indicated, she essentially single-handedly put Kamala’s 2020 presidential campaign out of commission with their memorable debate exchange. Since Russia launched soldiers into Ukraine more than five months ago, Lavrov and Blinken’s meeting was the highest-level known communication between Washington and Moscow.
