The 21-year-old Caitlin Clark has been a constant prodigy for the Iowa Hawkeyes for two seasons, now. Alongside LSU’s Angel Reese, she is largely seen as the most popular young female player in all of the college sports, right now.

However, in a recent game against Michigan State, Clark was involved in a controversial controversy when the game should solely have been remembered for her heroics. In a 76-73 victory, Clark produced 40 points, and ensured victory for her time with a late buzzer-beater. However, due to a mixup between the arena clock and the broadcast clock, most were certain that the buzzer beater should simply not have counted.

Clark had produced an impressive 3-pointer from near the midcourt logo and ensured what was her team’s 11th straight victory. However, following questions over whether the points should have been counted, Caitlin has now received support from another female sports icon, in the form of Serena Williams, albeit not directly.

Serena’s husband and American entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian posted on Twitter claiming that Clark deserved more respect and suggested that the shot should indeed have counted.

This was a response to a tweet by Ball is Life, which showed that there were still .1 seconds remaining on the clock when Clark took the 3-pointer.

The dramatic 76-73 victory saw Clark produce 40 of her team’s 76 points. The fact that she followed it up with the game-winning shot should ideally have resulted in only praise

The two teams were tied at 73 in the final few seconds, with the final shot of the game resulting in Clark’s 3-pointer. While social media responded with doubt, her coach Lisa Bluder had only praise for her star woman:

Caitlin has ice in her veins. Everybody knows it. Honestly, when it left my hand, I knew it was going in.

Hence, while the audience might have had their doubts, it was clear that the arena clock was not perfectly synchronized with the broadcast clock, leading to a range of people claiming that it should not have counted. Thankfully however, the referees knew what they were doing, and made the right call.
