Joel Embiid

Joel Embiid was simply sensational for the Philadelphia 76ers since the beginning of the 2021-22 season. Even though, he led them single-handedly without Ben Simmons, the 5xAll-Star left no stone unturned on the offensive end to reign superior as the leading point scorer. Yet he came ever so close, only to once again lose the MVP accolade to Denver Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic.

After the heart-breaking news, Joel Embiid was evidently seen affected on the floor as he failed to inspire the Sixers past the Miami Heat in Game 5. Sports media personality Shannon Sharpe went onto criticize Embiid for his below-par display as he reckoned the loss of the highest individual accolade got into the head of the 76ers’ ace-man.

Discussing the same topic with Skip Bayless on Undisputed, Sharpe stated, ““I do think he was impacted by the news. He started politicking a month ago. He was already putting it out there. Joel Embiid had got into the best shape of his career and it seemed like it was going to pay off in an individual award.

“But all of a sudden, you work so hard for something and you don’t achieve it. It did seem like he was impacted by the ball game. He did not seem as aggressive as I saw him in the previous three games.”

Joel Embiid only managed to score 17 points as the Sixers suffered a terrifying 120-85 defeat via the hands of top-seed Heat. But did Sharpe make a valid point? I mean Embiid was in the best shape of his career and was leading his team against all odds in the playoffs?

Also, looking upon his stats, Joel Embiid finished the regular season averaging 30.8 points, 11.7 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game. He shot 49.9% from the field and 37.1% from beyond the arc. He also recorded two triple-doubles and 46 double-doubles.

Has the 2021-22 MVP accolade snubbed Joel Embiid in the truest way? Or was Nikola Jokic a deserving winner?
