Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant recently mentioned in an interview that his name should be brought into the Greatest Of All Time conversation. That claim has since been debated a lot on various media outlets. The most dominant player to ever play the game, Shaquille O’Neal had an interesting take on Durant’s claim.

O’Neal was speaking on his podcast The Big Podcast with Shaq. Co-host Adam Lefkoe brought up the topic of Durant and the GOAT conversation. O’Neal had this to say:

I think he has his own special category like me. He's one of two of the most prolific scorers ever. If he can win one where he is the bus driver, we will definitely put him in that conversation.

O’Neal mentioned that Durant’s stint with Golden State Warriors tarnished his reputation. That is because Durant lost to the Warriors the previous season. And then to go and join them was not ok for the fans and the league. Now Durant has to fix that by leading a team to a championship.

O’Neal’s guests, former 6th Man of the Year Lou Williams and comedian Bill Bellamy agreed to this narrative that Durant’s timing was wrong. Had he joined them in the last few years and won championships, it would have been a different story. Williams adds that back then it was not ok to join the team you just lost to.

O’Neal and his guests went on to say that Durant has brought to the NBA something they have not seen in history. An almost 7 footer playing like a guard. Add to that elite precision from the field from all corners. That has labeled Durant as one of the most prolific scorers ever to play the game. But to get to the GOAT conversation, he has to do more than that.

Kevin Durant already has two championships. Durant did win two finals MVPs in those two title runs. But, they were with the record-breaking Golden State Warriors. The Warriors had already won a championship before Durant joined them. They also broke the single-season record for wins. The Warriors were that good. Durant added to their firepower to win the next two. The Warriors also won a fourth championship with the original core in 2022.

Since leaving the Warriors, Durant has not been to a Conference Championship game, let alone vying for the Title. O’Neal wants Durant to lead his star-studded Phoenix Suns team to a championship. Then the narrative around Durant can change. If he gets two, then his name will be up against the very best to ever do it.
