The Denver Nuggets took a 3-2 series lead over the Phoenix Suns with a 118-102 victory on Tuesday night, thanks to another dominant performance from Nikola Jokic. The two-time MVP recorded his fourth triple-double of the postseason with 29 points, 13 rebounds, and 12 assists, passing Wilt Chamberlain for the most triple-doubles by a center in the history of the NBA.
Jokic’s milestone was acknowledged by the INSIDE THE NBA crew after the game, where he had a humorous exchange with Shaquille O’Neal. The NBA legend gave a hilarious reason why he never broke Chamberlain’s record.
Ernie Johnson said, “You passed Wilt Chamberlain tonight for most triple-doubles by a Center. Congrats on that!” To this, Nikola Jokic replied, “Nice, thank you. Is Shaq on that list?” Upon hearing this, Shaq said, “No, because I never passed Big Honey.”
Shaq’s nickname for Jokic is Big Honey, which he explained earlier this season as a compliment for his sweet game.
Nikola Jokic sparks Nuggets’ 39-point third quarter in Game 5 victory over Suns
The Nuggets did not have an easy start to the game. They struggled to score in the second quarter, getting outscored by 8 points. The Suns were led by Devin Booker, who scored 19 in the first half but slowed down in the second to finish with 28 points, and Kevin Durant, who had 26 points and 11 rebounds for the game but shot on 10-of-24 from the field 0-of-3 from deep.
But the Nuggets came out of the locker room with a different energy and intensity in the third quarter, outscoring the Suns 39-25. Jokic was unstoppable in the period, scoring 17 of his 29 points on 7-for-9 shooting. The 16 points differential at the end of the game came from the difference in three-point shooting percentages. Nuggets had an impressive 48.1%. Meanwhile, the Suns just shot 33.3% from deep.
The Nuggets also got a huge boost from their bench, especially Bruce Brown, who scored 25 points on 7-for-11 shooting. The Suns could not keep up with the Nuggets’ onslaught. They will now face elimination in Game 6 on Thursday at home.
The Nuggets will try to advance to the Western Conference finals, where they will face either the Los Angeles Lakers or the Golden State Warriors. The Lakers lead that series 3-1 after a thrilling win on Monday night.
