“This league reminds me of the Lifetime Fitness league” Shaquille O’Neal mocks Dwight Howard for taking over the Taiwanese League

Shaquille O'Neal and Dwight Howard

It does seem like a millennium has gone by since Shaquille O’Neal and Dwight Howard last spoke, despite the fact that the two were former Laker players and have a long history of disagreement. O’Neal recently commented on the performance of his old rival Howard, who has been dominating the Taiwanese basketball league.

Lakers fans are well aware of the long-running animosity between Shaquille O’Neal and Dwight Howard. The two had a reputation for insulting one another during their respective playing careers, and this tendency continued even after Shaq’s retirement.

O’Neal and Howard’s careers began somewhat similar because they were both chosen first overall by the Orlando Magic. Before joining Kobe Bryant‘s Los Angeles Lakers, they both gained notoriety by serving as the team’s leader for a spell.

Howard decided to showcase his talents in the Taiwanese basketball league this season because no NBA team signed him, and O’Neal, as usual, had something to say about his dominant debut in Taiwan. Howard put on a mind-blowing performance in his debut game with his new team, scoring 38 points on 14 of 32 shooting, adding 25 rebounds, 9 assists, and 4 blocks.

When asked O’Neal about it in “The Big Podcast with Shaq,” he stated, “You should never be complimented for being a good father ’cause that’s what you’re supposed to do, right? He’s supposed to have 30 points playing against dudes 5’8.” Shaq then added: “This league reminds me of the Lifetime Fitness League every Saturday when I go work out on Saturdays.”

Shaquille O’Neal and Dwight Howard were monsters in their prime!

In the NBA’s 75-year history, Shaquille O’Neal has been universally acknowledged as its most dominant player. Throughout his 19 seasons in the league, he received numerous awards, including MVP and Rookie of the Year. O’Neal also won three NBA Finals MVP awards, a total of three scoring championships, and four NBA championships.

His outstanding career, which came to an end in 2011, earned him a spot on the 50th and 75th anniversary teams of the NBA. In 2016, he was also selected for induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

People frequently forget that Dwight Howard was once one of the top three players in the NBA and the strongest center due to some of his traits. His accomplishments include being named to the All-NBA First Team and All-Defensive First Team, winning the Defensive Player of the Year award three times, leading the league in rebounding five times, leading the blocks category twice, and playing in eight separate All-Star Games.

He won a championship in 2020 with the Los Angeles Lakers and was a part of the USA “Redeem Team” that won an Olympic gold medal in 2008.

Will Dwight Howard conquer the Taiwanese league?

Although the competition in the Taiwanese league is certainly not on an equal level with that in the NBA, Dwight Howard has displayed a larger portion of his skill set while playing abroad. The three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year frequently handled the ball first while taking numerous outside shots.

He has also already established himself as a big star in his new destination as Howard registered a stat line of 23 points, 9 rebounds, 10 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block in the second game with the Taoyuan Leopards.

It was unexpected that Dwight Howard was a free agent. The 36-year-old is demonstrating that he can still contribute to the NBA even though his peak is passed. Although Howard may be Shaquille O’Neal’s adversary, he seems to be embracing the opportunity with which he is able to play.
