“My worst day at ESPN would get me fired,” Shaquille O’Neal revealed why he loves working for TNT than ESPN
Shaquille O'Neal
Shaquille O’Neal is undoubtedly one of the top 10 greatest basketball players of all time. But there is something else that Shaq is also exceptionally great at, it’s being funny. After retiring from his much-celebrated NBA career, Shaquille O’Neal took his other talent to NBA on TNT. But before he joined TNT, ESPN was fighting to hire O’Neal.
Recently, O’Neal broke his silence about his decision to choose NBA on TNT over ESPN. While Shaq was appreciative of TNT, he also took an open shot at ESPN, and perhaps for their work culture. “My worst day at [TNT] would be a good day,” said O’Neal. He also added, “My worst day at ESPN would cause me to get fired.”
Coming from someone who frequently appears as a guest on ESPN, this might not only put ESPN in a bad light but also potentially start a bad relationship between Shaq and ESPN. However, the former Lakers‘ great comments about TNT seem on point. The co-hosts on TNT have broken all conventional rules of television and yet remain the most watched.
Shaquille O’Neal’s career at NBA on TNT
After Shaquille O’Neal ended his NBA career, a number of broadcasting networks contacted O’Neal to become the lead NBA analyst on their channel. Quiet definitely none could convince Shaq to join them. After playing his last season with the Boston Celtics, Shaq joined Inside the NBA, and the biggest reason was perhaps Ernie Johnson Jr. As Ernie and Shaq shared a good relationship together since the early days.
O’Neal joined Inside The NBA before the start of the 2012 NBA season. Before Shaq, legends like Magic Johnson and Chris Weber used to fill in for the 4th spot in their as guests on the show. Shaq joined Johnson, Kenny Smith, and Charles Barkley who was already known for bold and notorious remarks on TV. The co-hosts are often seen cracking jokes on TV and making hilarious comments. They are also roasted by fans on Twitter, which they openly display on the big screen.
Finally, after Shaquille O’Neal joined the team, it was complete. Shortly after O’Neal joined TNT, a segment called “Shaqtin’ a Fool” was added to their show. It features bloopers and embarrassing fails from around the league. Sometimes former players, as well as current players, also make a guest appearance on the show.
