Shaquille O’Neal reveals Bill Russell urged him to make AMENDS with Kobe Bryant

Three titles were won back-to-back by two of the best NBA players in history. They developed into a strong team under the direction of the best coach in the league. It was clear that Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal belonged in the Hall of Fame, and their time together felt like it was shaping history even as it happened.

However, they found it difficult to stand each other personally. To end the argument, it needed wise counsel from a third NBA legend. This is how, with Bill Russell’s help, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal were able to put their differences aside and become friends.

on January 18th, Martin Luther King Jr. Russell, and Shaquille O’Neal met before to the game. According to a story from ESPN at the time, the two discussed their experiences in the league. Russell claimed that Wilt Chamberlain, his former foe, had changed for the better after retiring. The two were speaking on the phone twice a week by the time Chamberlain passed away.

Shaquille O’Neal was pushed by Russell to attempt to take his rivalry with Kobe Bryant to a level similar. Before the game, he made a point to greet Bryant and inquire about his family. The two gave each other a hug. “We’ve been through so many wars together,” Bryant told the Associated Press. “Now, [it feels good to] just be able to move on, try to do the best for this team, wish him the best in South Beach.”

The interactions between the two are crucial because a lot of their public trash-talking may have been overstated. Since then, both athletes have acknowledged that they overplayed their rivalry. Shaquille O’Neal said to ESPN in 2009 that he “always loved Kobe” and that the two reconciled during the Lakers’ three-peat Lakers era.

Shaquille O’Neal was shocked when Kobe Bryant perished in an unforeseen helicopter crash. Over time, the two of them had become close. At Bryant’s burial service, he delivered a moving eulogy in which he acknowledged how the two developed their genuine conflict into a devoted rivalry. At the very end, their ties to one another’s families were strong enough that Kobe sent one of his last texts to Shareef, Shaquille O’Neal’s kid.

“Kobe and I pushed one another to play some of the greatest basketball of all time…And, yes, sometimes, like immature kids, we argued, we fought, we bantered or insulted each other with off-handed remarks. But make no mistake, even when folks thought we were on bad terms, when the cameras were turned off, he and I would throw a wink at each other and say, ‘Let’s go whoop some ass.’” Shaquille O’Neal said.
