“Don’t expect me to call you a superstar” Shaquille O’Neal reveals modern-day players are ‘NO-Greats’ until they perform at LeBron, Jordan, Kobe level

The NBA is without a doubt the world’s most popular basketball league. The league is home to the best players from across the world, who showcase their abilities to fans. There are hundreds of players in the NBA right now, but there are a few who are simply a cut above the rest such as Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, Lebron James and Steph Curry to name a few. The top three or five players in a league are typically recognised as superstars.

That is, or should be, the case. However, the term “superstar” has become overused in the media in recent years. They will label a guy a superstar after one or two outstanding seasons. To be honest, it takes much more than one or two seasons to be considered a superstar in the NBA.
Shaquille O’Neal’s take on “superstars” in the NBA

NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal has been working as an analyst for quite some time now, having retired from the league after 19 years, winning 4 championships with 6 different franchises it would be an understatement to call Shaq a superstar. Shaq is also known for his direct and, most of the time, correct takes. Keeping this in mind, O’Neal decided to offer his perspective on why he doesn’t believe many players to be superstars in a recent episode of “The Big Podcast.”
“I don’t seen Mike, I don’t seen Kobe, I don’t seen D-Wade, I don’t seen Penny Hardaway, I don’t seen LeBron, I don’t seen Kevin Johnson, I don’t seen Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson, Tim Duncan. If you ain’t doin what they did or bout they did, don’t be looking for me to call you no superstar. I don’t seen it at all. I don’t play with made men. Embiid, made men. These little abject failures that you all talking about now? Get them out of my face … I don’t think so!”
Prior to that, Shaquille O’Neal named Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell as two players who have been incorrectly labelled as superstars. He only views players to be superstars if they are crowd pleasers, good leaders, and consistent winners, especially in the playoffs. O’Neal declined to label Gobert and Mitchell as superstars due to their lack of playoff success. They’ve had terrific regular-season success, but it hasn’t translated into postseason success.
Shaquille O’Neal faced some of the best players during his career. So, when a legend like him sees numerous players being considered as superstars despite not being very consistent, it obviously irritates him, as he stated on the podcast. In addition, Shaq slammed Kevin Durant’s career outside of the Golden State Warriors. Apart from his time with the Warriors, he considers KD’s career to be a failure.
