Skip Bayless remembering Unselfishness of Bill Russell

The basketball world is yet to recover from the loss of one of the greatest stars of the game – Bill Russell. His passing at the age of 88 years shocked everyone even though his health was an issue for some years. No player has left a more significant impact on the game of basketball than the Boston Celtics icon Bill Russell. Not only was he a champion on the court, but his impact off the court was also meaningful. Playing in the early days of the league, Russell exerted his will to win and dominated to rim area like no one else. Russell was considered one of the pioneers of the sport of basketball.

Many players, coaches, and league authorities paid homage to the iconic star. Skip Bayless also dedicated his recent edition of “Undisputed” to Russell as he praised Russell, saying he revolutionized “how to play professional basketball.”

He said, “This man revolutionized how to play professional basketball. He became the most unselfish superstar I have ever seen and it’s not even close.”

During the 50’s and 60’s era, Boston Celtics were the team to beat. But it was not that easy, considering their defensive strength. In previous years, the Celtics had been a high-scoring team but lacked the defensive presence needed to close out tight games. With the added defensive presence of Russell, the Celtics had laid the foundation for a dynasty.

Bill Russell was their rim protector and was also able to close down the top scorer of the opposite team on the wing. He won eleven championships throughout his illustrious 13-season career, becoming one of the biggest winners the league has seen.

Many might expect Bill to go 30+ points with his athletism and control near the rim. But he never averaged above 20 in his career (except in 1962, and 1963 playoffs), and rather was happy to initiate a fast break, allowing others to score more. He rather was a rebounding specialist and strong shot-blocker, shutting down the opposition. 12-time All-Star Russell still holds the record of 25 rebound averages playing 45+ minutes in the game after 60+ seasons past his retirement.

Off the court also, Bill Russell helped his community selflessly. He suffered heavy racist abuse and fought against the same throughout his life. It would be fitting to say that Russell’s life was marked by an uphill battle against racism and controversial actions and statements in response to racism. His active involvement in the Black Power movement was commendable. He received Nation’s highest award – The presidential medal for freedom in 2011 for the same.

The basketball world has a heavy heart after losing such a selfless individual and an NBA legend. Many NBA stars including Stephen Curry, Jerry West, and Scottie Pippen paid homage to the iconic star of the league. Bill Russell was known as one of the greatest players the sport had ever seen, and he was truly an exceptional human being.
