The Los Angeles Lakers are on the brink of elimination after losing Game 3 of the Western Conference finals to the Denver Nuggets, 115-102. The Nuggets now have a commanding 3-0 lead in the series and are one win away from reaching the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history.
The Lakers, who were the favorites to win the title this season, have been outplayed by the Nuggets in every aspect of the game. The Nuggets have been more aggressive, more resilient and more clutch than the Lakers, who have struggled to find consistent production from anyone other than LeBron James.
James, who is widely regarded as the best player in the world, has been facing criticism from his detractors for his inability to lead his team out of this hole. One of his most vocal critics is Skip Bayless, a sports analyst and TV personality who is known for his controversial opinions and his disdain for James. But on Monday, he dismissed James’s doubters who were saying that “this is the end for LeBron.” He added that “it’s laughable” to say its the end of James and said, “I don’t see the end. I see bursts of greatness in all 3 games against Denver.“
James, who has averaged nearly a triple-double with 23.7 points, 9.3 rebounds and 10.3 assists in this series, said after Game 3 that he was not worried about being down 0-3 and that he was focused on winning one game at a time. “Just gotta get one. It’s one at a time. Just focus on Game 4, and that’s all you can really think about. Obviously, this game is over and done with, we had some opportunities, but we didn’t come through, so just get ready for Monday. Just gotta get one,” James said.
Can LeBron James and the Lakers pull off a miracle comeback?
The odds are stacked against James and the Lakers as they face a daunting task of winning four straight games against a confident and motivated Nuggets team. No team in NBA history has ever overcome a 3-0 deficit in a playoff series, with teams holding such a lead going 149-0.
However, if there is anyone who can defy history and pull off a miracle comeback, it is James. He has been in this situation before, when he led the Cleveland Cavaliers back from a 3-1 deficit against the Golden State Warriors in the 2016 NBA Finals.
The Lakers still have a talented roster that can compete with any team in the league when they play with intensity, urgency and cohesion. They have two of the top five players in the league in James and Anthony Davis, who can dominate both ends of the floor. They have young players like Rui Hachimura and Austin Reaves, who have shown flashes of potential and energy.
The Lakers are not out of this series yet. They still have a chance to make history and silence their doubters. They still have LeBron James.
