“Too often he turns into a cute little side show”: Skip Bayless on Trae Young after Heat destroy Hawks in Game 2
Trae Young and Skip Bayless
After being thumped in Game 1, all eyes were on the Hawks’ All-Star. Trae Young’s clutch plays cost the away team their 2nd attempt in the 2022 post season. As a result of which, Atlanta Hawks lost to Miami Heat 115-105, going down 2-0 in the series.
Trae Young is in 4th season with the Hawks. His last season’s heroics gave him very suiting nickname “Ice Trae”. His 4th quarter plays and shooting silenced multiple opposition’s heckling fans. Eventually Young helped Atlanta to reach conference finals in 2021. But this season has been quite difficult for him. While some would suggest that the expectations were high or he couldn’t manage himself with all opposition fans targeting him. On the same note, Skip Bayless, as ruthless as he always was, labeled 23-years old star “Overrated”.
In recent edition of “Undisputed” Shannon Sharp and Skip Bayless analyzed the Hawks’ Game 2 against Miami Heat. While talking about Trae, Skip said, “He (Trae Young) is fun to watch, He has elite quickness, start-stop ability. But too often he turns into a cute little side show to me.”
Trae Young ball handling mishaps haunts Atlanta Hawks in Game 2
Trae Young is Hawks primary ball handler. He is a great shooter and passer of the ball. In all, Hawks keep Young at Priority level in the roster. He proved himself at very young age, as he posted 29 points and 9 assists season in 2020, only the 5th player to do so in history of the game. Also his 2021 season, especially post season was very much encouraging site for Atlanta fans.
But come 2022, though Young had many high scoring game, his impact on the game was neutralized by his mistakes and turnovers. Skip commented on his mistakes and said, “He is way over-rated. He is a good player but not a great one. He will always be a good player not great one.”
The 70-year-old analyst also said that Young can never reach to a superstar level that can carry the team, which is contradicting to the Hawks vision for their marquee player.
Trae averages 5 turnovers per game in regular season. But in his 2nd playoff game against Top seed Miami Heat, Trae had 10 turn overs and was 2-for-10 from the range. His 3-points attempts were also highlighted by Skip as he considers them as “try for living up to the hype” and killing the game for the team.
Speaking on the turnover issues, Statistically Trae leads the unwanted stat in the league. He had 303 turnovers in 76 games. If they are to play against the top EC team, Miami Heat, the turnover and efficiency has to efficiently improve in order to make their way back into the series.
