Ben Simmons, a former player for the Philadelphia 76ers, has come under fire from ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith for using social media to brag about the team’s loss to the Boston Celtics in Game Seven. Smith, known for his outspokenness, didn’t hold back as he voiced his frustrations on his “Know Mercy” podcast.

Smith criticized Simmons for his refusal to take the court and the subsequent trade demand that ultimately led to his departure from the 76ers.

“The only thing worse than James Harden was that sorry, trifling ass Ben Simmons,” Smith said. “And I tried to be nice to Ben Simmons. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. How the hell are you talking about a basketball player when you treat putting on a basketball uniform and dribbling, when you treat that as if somebody asked you to get on the front lines in Ukraine to fight Russia? That’s how scared he is to play basketball.

“I mean, he’s the one talking about it. They brought up mental illness. I didn’t bring that up, I didn’t say anything about that. I’m not making light of something like that. He brought that up. He said that was his rationale, he said that he needed therapy, he said that he needed to talk to people. Then it’s a back injury, then it’s a knee injury. There’s all of these excuses not to play. But that brother never missed a check, though. He always make sure the check is in the account. And you are talking about James Harden and the 76ers? The team you quit on? The team you left hanging? The team that you was supposed to help deliver a championship as the No. 1 overall pick in the draft?”

Smith also pointed out the various reasons Simmons had given for his absence, including mental health concerns, back injuries, and knee issues. Smith emphasized that Simmons never missed a paycheck despite his prolonged absence from the court.

Simmons has found himself at the center of controversy after he posted a snapshot on his Instagram story, bragging over his former team’s loss to the Boston Celtics in Game Seven of their series.

His current team, the Brooklyn Nets, had been swept by the 76ers in the first round of the playoffs. The timing of Simmons’ post, which showed him sitting near a glass of wine and seemingly undisturbed by the outcome, further fueled the controversy.

Simmons, who was drafted first overall by the 76ers in 2016, had an unhealthy relationship with the team in his final seasons. His departure was part of a larger trade that sent him to the Nets and brought James Harden to the 76ers. However, Simmons’ sizeable contract, still has two years and approximately $78 million remaining.

The fallout from Simmons’ social media post and the subsequent backlash highlight the tired relationship between the player and his former team. His actions off the court and his failure to meet expectations have left many disappointed. The controversy surrounding his social media post only serves to amplify the doubts surrounding his future in the NBA.
