The San Antonio Spurs made an extraordinary pick at the 2023 NBA Draft by selecting what many experts have proclaimed as the ultimate unicorn – Victor Wembanyama. He’s being hailed as the most promising prospect since LeBron James himself. Wembanyama stands at a staggering seven feet and five inches, making him one of the tallest NBA players in history. His handle and shot-making ability at his height make him one of the most unique players in the NBA.

Wembanyama played for the LNB pro A team, Metropolitans 92 in France. He was the youngest player in league history to win the Pro A MVP award while also winning the Pro A Best Defender award. Wembanyama’s towering frame makes him a true Center, however, the San Antonio Spurs have made the decision to start Wembanyama at the Power Forward position. Opting to start Zach Collins at Center is surely a controversial decision by the San Antonio Spurs.

Hall-of-fame coach Gregg Popovich is hardly known to make mistakes, winning five NBA championships in his tenure as head coach. He also developed multiple Hall-of-Fame players like Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker and Kawhi Leonard. The Spurs’ decision may be in part due to Wembanyama’s slender frame. Wembanyama is listed at 210 lbs which is considerably lower compared to other NBA centers. Wembanyama is susceptible to being posted up by heavier players at his position, which can explain the Spurs’ decision.

The seven-foot-four prodigy is an extraordinary shot-blocker, leading the LNB Pro A in blocked shots. Playing Wembanyama at Power Forward can allow him to roam on defence and protect the rim, similar to Giannis Antetokounmpo and Anthony Davis.

Wembanyama played two games during the NBA summer league. He scored 36 points, 20 rebounds, eight blocks and three assists on 41% shooting from the floor. He played for about 54 minutes. Wembanyama’s first regular season game in the NBA will be held on 26 October 2023 against the Dallas Mavericks led by Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
