The NBA is full of comparisons done by analysts and ex-coaches, and an off-season day is incomplete unless someone passes a comment comparing two individuals from the NBA. One such comparison was made by former coach Stan Van Gundy who took the two most unrelated players – Dwight Howard and Anthony Davis and compared them.
While talking on the Knuckleheads podcast, Van Gundy said, “I think Anthony Davis is great, but when they selected the NBA’s top 75 list, it’s not close. You cannot make a case that Anthony Davis had a better career than Dwight Howard. That’s absolutely ridiculous.” Van Gundy was talking about the top 75 list of the NBA released by them in 2021.
The list, although not popular among players as many discredited it, was still in talks for some time. As Van Gundy pointed out, Howard was the most noticeable omission from the list. Although currently playing in the China league, one can make a case for Van Gundy picking Dwight over Davis.
NBA Twitter reacts to Stan Van Gundy’s statement

NBA Twitter quickly voiced their opinions on Stan Van Gundy’s statements. Many appreciated the genuineness of his statements, while some called him out for preferring a sellout over Anthony Davis and supported Davis’s play style over that of Dwight Howard.
Here are some of the reactions from Twitter:
According to many, Howard’s run with Orlando Magic, where he took the Magic to the Finals. Both have championships, although as teammates for the Los Angeles Lakers, in 2020, so that debate can be left aside. However, the individual accolades section is more decorated for Howard, with him winning three Defensive Player of the Year, contrary to Davis’s none.
Whether or not Dwight Howard deserved a spot is for the public to decide. Howard constantly slams the Lakers for not bringing him back and is currently playing in the Taiwan Basketball League. As Davis prepares for his 13th NBA season, he will look to make a significant impact.
