“Nooo, I don’t wanna go to Boston” Celtics star Jayson Tatum reveals how badly he wanted to be acquired by Phoenix Suns
Jayson Tatum
Jayson Tatum has been tearing through the league lately and is slowly emerging as one of the biggest players of the game today. The Boston Celtics’ forward took over the leadership role over three years ago and the team had only gotten better ever since. Tatum is currently battling it out with the Milwaukee Bucks to get to the Eastern Conference Finals.
The Celtics were off to a very shaky start to the season hitting multiple losing streaks along the way which had the entire league questioning their future. Rumors began to spread around the league hinting that Jaylen Brown was going to get traded but the duo spoke out of the topic saying they wished to make it work. They finished at the second seed in the East with 51 wins and swept title favorites Brooklyn Nets in the first round.
Jayson Tatum reveals how badly he did not want to get drafted by the Boston Celtics
Jayson Tatum has been very successful with the Celtics averaging 26.9 points, 8 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game this season. This is his second straight season averaging such numbers and he also helped his team to reach the ECF back in the bubble. However, Boston was not where he wished to take his talents. On The Old Man & The Three podcast, Tatum revealed that his interests were in the Phoenix Suns before being drafted. “I was in Phoenix, I went to go meet with the coach and see the facility and see the players.”
“I remember, my agent called me… I had a flight that night to go back home, he was like tomorrow… I need you to pack a bag cause you’re flying to Boston… I’m like no I don’t want to go to Boston.” His college coach Mike Krzyzewski had apparently requested him to train with the Celtics a week before the draft and Jayson agreed. The All-Star personally did not feel that he would fit in the Celtics roster and thought the Suns were a better destination.
Phoenix Suns miss out on two major draft picks
This is not the first time Jayson Tatum has expressed how he felt being drafted by his current team and why he wanted to play for the Arizonian team. But his luck worked for the best as Boston is currently making a huge run against the Bucks in the second round of the playoffs. He averaged 29.5 points per game during the first round and is now putting up 24.8 points a piece.
Besides him, Phoenix also had the opportunity to draft All-NBA guard Luka Doncic. The player was overlooked based on the requirements of the team at that time but as it looks now, he would have been a great fitting among players like Devin Booker. All three players and teams involved are currently making a run for the title in the second round.
