The Los Angeles Lakers showcased grit and determination in their 128-112 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 1 of the first round of the NBA playoffs. Five Lakers finished the game with at least 20 points. Rui Hachimura scored a playoff career-high 29 points. Anthony Davis filled up the stat sheet with 22 points, 12 rebounds, and a playoff career-high seven blocks. LeBron James scored 21 points, Austin Reaves added 23 and D’Angelo Russell finished with 19 in a terrific team effort for the visitors. The Lakers had not had four players score 20 or more points in a playoff game since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Byron Scott, and James Worthy accomplished the feat in 1988.
Though the Lakers were effective as a unit on the offensive end, the team was heavily dependent on Davis being the defensive anchor, and he did not disappoint. His clamping of the Grizzlies’ offense in the fourth quarter helped the Lakers erase a 12-point deficit and win Game 1.
Though, not everything went as expected for the Lakers. Late in the first half, Davis injured his right arm and was heard saying, “I can’t feel my arm,” which was concerning for Lakers fans. With 1:15 remaining in the second quarter, the Lakers were jolted. Davis tried to secure an offensive rebound from Austin Reaves’ missed shot. He instead collided with Jaren Jackson Jr. and immediately grasped his arm. The diagnosis for Davis’ injury was a stinger, which can be initially painful but usually heals quickly. He was able to return to play in the second half.
However, his status for the third quarter was uncertain during the half-time break. And during the break, ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith showed no remorse or concern for Davis and instead, he criticized the Lakers star for suffering another injury.

Smith said, “This is unbelievable… We don’t even get to evaluate the greatness of Anthony Davis because something happens.” He added, “How long is this brother gonna last?” questioning the player’s durability. Davis came back in the second half and pushed his team to victory, and the Lakers will hope for him to do the same throughout the postseason. The superstar’s availability will be the key to the Lakers’ playoff hopes.
