While some would always disagree with the point guard debate, most would agree that Stephen Curry is the GOAT after Magic Johnson. Talking about the same, when asked about it on Gil’s Arena podcast hosted by Gilbert Arenas, “Are you the best point guard ever?” Curry replied, “Yes. It’s me and Magic. Is that the conversation?” Many agreed with this claim of his, while some disagreed.
Among those who agreed was Stephen A. Smith. On his recent ‘Hot Take’ episode, the hot take machine supported Curry’s claim. He said, “I’m talking impact … I’m talking about from the point guard position, you can make an argument that Steph Curry’s impact, right, is greater than that of even Earvin “Magic” Johnson. And that is why I would sit up there and say, ‘Of course old school cats are going to disagree with me, d*rn it, I’m not even sure I’m right.'”
While Smith agreed that people from that era of basketball played a more stiff and physical basketball and that they would not agree with his take, including the likes of Michael Jordan and Isiah Thomas, who would “punch [him] in the head,” he still made a claim that Curry warrant discussion and that he is making a “legitimate argument” as he calls himself the second-best point guard in NBA history.

Comparing Magic Johnson and Stephen Curry
The most fundamental difference is that Magic Johnson had five rings in comparison to Stephen Cury’s four. In size, too, Johnson was much bigger and was deemed a revolutionary player who changed the passing game of the NBA. Curry, too, changed the game but in terms of shooting. Nostalgia, too, plays a significant role in why people place Johnson over Curry.
Curry, of course, is not a ‘traditional point guard,’ with him being the best shooter on the team. Point guards are supposed to be the people who get the ball to their teams and create the best shots, but while Curry does not do that, he does what brings his team up the other team by shooting himself. It is hard to compare the two because the generations are different.
Leaving everything aside, the one thing which point guards get clapped for is their defensive capabilities. Johnson, too, was not such a good defender, but Curry is, at least in the team’s respect. As Curry said, “Magic’s resume is ridiculous. So the fact that we’re even having that conversation is a place that I never thought I’d be in,” he finds himself lucky to be in this conversation where people are at least considering. Still, for himself, he’ll always keep himself at the top.
