Stephen A. Smith and LeBron James

When Stephen A. Smith revealed his views upon Los Angeles Lakers’ need to trade LeBron James, he was criticized all over the world of NBA for his least-thoughtful take. However, the sports media personality has come out to state that his words his misinterpreted and in no-particular-way he was willing to throw shades at LeBron, rather was trying to elaborate upon his importance in the purple and gold franchise.

On the most recent episode of the ESPN’s First Take, Smith emphasized how Anthony Davis’ value has deteriorated over the course of time due to his injury-prone nature. On the other hand, LeBron James being in the 19th season is still managing to average 30 points per game and the Lakers should consider restructuring their entire roster by trading their most valuable asset, which even gets them equivalent returns.

To precise Smith stated, “I get misquoted and taken out of context all the time. Thing about it is that I’m talking about LeBron James. I am in no way throwing any kind of shade on him. I’m paying tribute to his greatness. He is 37, he just finished his 19th season in the NBA averaging 30 and he’s the only commodity the Los Angeles Lakers have.

“You know as well as I do, the Lakers can’t get anything close to equitable compensation for the talent that is Anthony Davis, because of the injury-prone tendencies of Anthony Davis, so you scratch that out. “If you’re the Los Angeles Lakers, and you don’t want to replicate what happened in the twilight years of Kobe Bryant the basketball player. Of course, God rest his soul.

“If you want to avoid replicating that, what do you do? Who’s the one piece that you have that everybody in the league will call and say, ‘What you want? What we got to give you for him? What you looking for?’ Who’s the one person that has a shot of allowing the Lakers to receive phone calls of that nature? That’s LeBron James.”

Given that LeBron James stays in Hollywood until the end of 2022-23 season as per his latest contract, trading him would mean that LA Lakers have surely given up hopes of contesting for the championship next season. What changes are going to be witnessed in the most celebrated NBA franchise? Remains to be seen.
