Stephen A. Smith, a prominent figure in the basketball community, garners attention for his outspoken views and outlandish statements. Recently, he grabbed headlines by organizing a basketball camp. However, it’s not the camp itself, but rather the steep fee of $2,899 for young athletes to participate that has stirred controversy within the community. The exorbitant cost has led to criticism directed at the host of First Take.
In response to the backlash, Stephen A. addressed his critics by urging them to consider his background. He highlighted his consistent donations ranging from $50,000 to $100,000 to his former HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) and his long-standing role as an ambassador for HBCU Week, an initiative that has facilitated over $46 million in scholarships.
“Do you have any idea who the hell you’re talking to,” Smith said. “I am a graduate of an HBCU. I donate a minimum of $50,000 to $100,000 a year to my alma mater… minimum. Did you know that I am the ambassador for HBCU Week and I have been for years? $46 million dollars in scholarships.”
Furthermore, he emphasized his contributions to promoting HBCU Month at ESPN every year since 2018 and highlighted the positive impact of the college fair he organized for HBCUs. This fair played a pivotal role in persuading the NFL to substantially increase their donations to HBCUs.

Kwame Brown slams Stephen A. Smith for charging $2899 for his basketball camp
Stephen A. Smith, the host of ESPN’s premier show, has found himself embroiled in controversy due to the cost of his basketball camp making headlines. Smith is reportedly setting a fee of $2899 for kids who wish to take part in his camp, scheduled to run from August 6th to August 12th.
Numerous individuals, including former NBA No.1 overall pick Kwame Brown, have criticized Stephen A. for this decision. Brown raised pertinent questions, pondering what valuable insights Stephen A. could impart to young participants at a basketball camp. Given that Stephen A. has minimal professional basketball experience beyond his first year in college, Brown’s inquiries hold merit. He queried, “All I want to know is this: what the hell is Stephen A. [Smith] gonna tell a bunch of kids at a basketball camp?”
Furthermore, Kwame pointed out that even NBA players typically charge around $250 to $300 for kids to attend their camps. He underscored the incongruity of Stephen A. charging $3000 and questioned what substantive basketball knowledge he would offer in exchange for such a considerable sum. Brown emphatically voiced, “The average NBA player, they charge like maybe $250-300 per kid. This motherf**r’s $3,000? Stephen A. Smith gonna charge $3,000 to teach kids about basketball. What the f* he gon’ tell them?”
