Despite the fact that Anthony Davis‘ health has eluded him for much of the previous two seasons, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith still believes he is one of the league’s top players when he is healthy. Smith said on “First Take” that a healthy Davis is better than both Luka Doncic and Nikola Jokic. The Los Angeles Lakers had a disappointing season, failing to qualify for the NBA Playoffs. The significant injury concerns surrounding Anthony Davis were one of the causes for their downfall.
But it was AD’s surprise remark that he hadn’t shot a basketball since April 5th, 2022, that was even more surprising. In other words, the one-time NBA Champion hasn’t made a basket in nearly two months. This news sent the NBA world into a frenzy, and the former Pelican was subjected to some harsh, but well-deserved criticism.
Disappointing season for both Lakers and Anthony Davis
If Anthony Davis had been healthy throughout the season, the Lakers would almost surely have made the playoffs. While his durability is a concern, AD is without a doubt one of the NBA’s most gifted big men, an excellent scorer who can play both ends of the court. Davis, who has showed the potential to average 28 points and 11 rebounds per game in his career, has averaged just 22.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game over the last two seasons.
The Los Angeles Lakers had a terrible season in 2021-22, failing to even qualify for the play-in tournament. While Russell Westbrook’s debut season with the team was a struggle, Anthony Davis’ performance in only 40 games was disappointing. The Lakers’ hope is that LeBron James and Davis can stay healthy and remain the team’s backbone. However, there has been more discussion over whether Davis has enough impact to lift a team’s floor to that level.

Despite all the negative criticism, many people still believe Anthony Davis is a Top-7 player in the NBA when he is healthy. This is mostly due to his extensive injury history, which has resulted in his missing over 100 games. Despite this, some people still believe in Davis’ greatness when he is healthy. Stephen A. Smith, a member of the First Take talk show, is one of these individuals who has made a big claim. The analyst added that he would choose the Laker forward over league MVP Nikola Jokic and other talents including as Luka Doncic, Jayson Tatum, and Jimmy Butler!
Jokic has won back-to-back MVP awards, something Davis has never done, and Butler, Tatum, and Doncic have all demonstrated their worth in the playoffs this season, something AD has never done on his own. A healthy AD is unquestionably a beast, but Stephen A. Smith may have gone a little too far here. Davis has only had one season of good health, during which time the Lakers have won a championship. If the Lakers have a resurgence next season with Davis on the court consistently, Smith’s assessment may be correct.
