“You can’t mention Wilt Chamberlain without bringing up Bill Russell” Stephen A. Smith knows he’s going to get destroyed for his Wilt Chamberlain slander

Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell

Some people believe that Hall of Fame big player Wilt Chamberlain is underappreciated as the true GOAT but Stephen A. Smith, on the other hand, isn’t one of them. On Wednesday’s episode of ESPN’s First Take, the famed ESPN presenter slandered the legendary Wilt Chamberlain. So much so that even Stephen A knew he was going to be slaughtered for his remarks before he even said them.

Stephen A.Smith isn’t criticising Chamberlain’s domination as a player, but he can’t ignore the fact that Wilt only won two championships. Given how many great athletes never received a championship over their careers, that’s not terrible. However, as Smith has repeatedly stated, Chamberlain’s two championships bear little resemblance to Bill Russell‘s 11 championships with the Boston Celtics.

The golden era of Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell.

For decades, the NBA has been a star’s league. But even among the stars, there’s an exclusive club—Russell and Chamberlain. They’re all part of a select group that paved the way for the NBA superstars of today. They were the faces of the league, and when the two of them squared off, there was guaranteed buzz. The average attendance at a Celtics game in 1963 was 7,455 fans, unless Wilt was in town, and then the Garden would fill to its capacity of over 14,000.

The undeniable bond and, quite frequently, the burden of being highly prominent was shared by the two adversaries. Athletes of black complexion whose size made it tough for them to blend in with the crowd, were tasked with pulling the championship trophy away from one another. Wilt was selected to the All-NBA first team seven times, but Russell was only selected three times, Wilt earned seven scoring titles to Russell’s zero, Wilt had 11 rebounding titles to Russell’s four, and Wilt set an NBA record of 100 points in a single game, whilst Russell’s career high is 37 points. Russell has a dominant 11-2 advantage in championships, which was the metric that mattered to him whereas Wilt never felt the joy of defeating Russell and the Celtics in the NBA Finals.

Stephen A. Smith takes Bill Russell’s 11 over Wilt Chamberlain’s 2.

Stephen A. Smith, who was on the First Take with Chris Russo and Amare Stoudemire, surprised the audience when he said that if Curry wins another ring, the legendary Wilt Chamberlain will be the one pushed out of the top 10. “When we think about you and your era, we constantly think about Bill Russell and 11 rings. 11 to 2. You can’t mention Chamberlain without bringing up Russell, and when you bring up Russell, you bring up 11 rings”, Smith stated on the First Take.

Nonetheless, Bill Russell’s domination will permanently stain Wilt’s legacy. Wilt’s greatest rival at the time, Russell, won so many championships over his career, which is a criticism on Wilt. Because they were so dominant, Jordan, LeBron, and Kareem all stopped the majority of their opponents from winning.Curry will join some special company if he wins this title, and it may force some fans and analysts to reconsider where certain old-time legends stand in the NBA’s hierarchy.
