Ben Simmons has fallen off the charts in a way that’s never been seen before. From an NBA All-Star and Rookie of the Year to barely playing 2 quarters a game, he has declined drastically. While players decline because of age or injuries, Simmons’ decline is related to neither of the two. No one has been able to explain his decline, with some stating that it’s a mental block.
Many have labelled him soft since he often sits out games and doesn’t give 100% even when he does play. The latest to join this tirade against Simmons is Stephen A. Smith. Smith criticised Simmons on air. He said that he had lost all faith in Simmons. He added that it was unfair on his team that Simmons sat on the bench while the rest of the team was working hard for victory.
Smith was quoted saying, “I have lost complete faith in Ben Simmons. The only thing I’m mad about is I didn’t get a chance to tell him to his face…You on the bench looking like a male model, while the rest of your team playing…”
Simmons has been relatively mum about what he’s been dealing with. Ever since he stopped playing for Philadelphia, he has failed to reach the level he used to play at. While never a good shooter, Simmons was an excellent passer and playmaker. He could facilitate the offence and involve his teammates. In Brooklyn however, he has failed to do anything of note.
A delve into the Ben Simmons saga
The Ben Simmons saga has many parallel plot lines. However, it all appears to start at one moment. Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semi-finals. In a do-or-die game against the Atlanta Hawks, the game was down to the wire and the 76ers had to score.
With 3:29 on the clock and the 76ers down by 2, the pressure was on them. Simmons was passed the ball for a wide-open layup. He refused to take the layup and passed it to his teammate who was doubled. The 76ers lost the series. Ever since then, Simmons went into a shell, even withdrawing from the Olympics. He later refused to show up to 76ers training camp and demanded a trade from the Sixers.
After a series of incidences with the 76ers, in which Simmons missed out on media day, was kicked out of a game and was publicly criticised by teammate Joel Embiid, he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets. Even after the trade he showed no progress in his situation. He often sat out games citing injury and has been missing in action. Fans can only wonder where he’s gone and when he will return.
