When playing at home, the Golden State Warriors are probably the NBA’s hardest team to defeat. Warriors point guard Stephen Curry also appears to be a bit difficult to work with when it comes to changes occurring near his family’s residence, particularly when it comes to the construction of affordable housing next to their house in California.
Regarding a proposed multifamily housing construction project in their affluent Bay Area community of Atherton, Steph Curry and Ayesha Curry have expressed their worries. The Atherton, California, mayor Bill Widmer and city manager George Rodericks received a letter from the Golden State Warriors star and his wife that read
“As Atherton residents… we have been following along with the housing element updates with a special interest in the 23 Oakwood property. We hesitate to add to the ‘not in our backyard’ (literally) rhetoric, but we wanted to send a note before today’s meeting. Safety and privacy for us and our kids continue to be our top priority and one of the biggest reasons we chose Atherton as home.”
The letter further read, “With the density being proposed for 23 Oakwood, there are major concerns in terms of both privacy and safety with three-story townhomes looming directly behind us. We kindly ask that the town adopts the new housing element without the inclusion of 23 Oakwood. Should that not be sufficient for the state, we ask that the town commits to investing in considerably taller fencing and landscaping to block sight lines onto our family’s property.”
What is the way forward for Stephen Curry and the housing project
The Currys’ letter has received criticism, which is natural, but it seems logical that they would object to such a proposal as well. As one of the most well-known families in Northern California, they observed in their letter, having others be able to view your home can raise safety and privacy concerns.
There are other wealthy residents of the Atherton neighborhood who have expressed their worries besides Steph Curry and Ayesha Curry. The state Housing and Community Development Department must receive the plan by January 31. At 2:00 PM PST on March 31, the Atherton City Council will vote on the final draft of the proposal.
It is unlikely that the town will provide funding for planting and taller fencing if the idea is implemented. If Steph Curry and Ayesha Curry are uncomfortable with people being able to see onto their property, they will likely have to pay for such renovations themselves.
