Sydel Curry and The Curry Family

Stephen Curry’s sister Sydel Curry was a volleyball player and like everyone in her family was on the pathway to becoming a professional athlete but due to a series of concussions forced herself to step away from the game, making her reevaluate the way her life would proceed.

Sydel Curry Lee did not grow up in a household that prioritised the importance of mental health. “I grew up in a very Christian faith-based home. I was raised in the church. I was raised in a Black family, Mental health wasn’t really talked about that much in my family at all.” Becoming a mental health advocate, she has helped not just herself navigate through her life, but also has helped numerous people too.

Stephen Curry’s sister-Sydel’s Opinion on Mental Health and Religion

Sydel Curry

Stephen Curry has made his faith very public and it is because of his family that he grew up a Christian and thus, his sister shares the same beliefs. Talking about how people question if there is a God and if a person is a believer and health why would they need mental health, To answer the question Curry said, “Yes, 100 per cent.” A big part of me getting through my day and me being able to do what I do is because I do rely so heavily on my faith. But I also say, “Jesus made therapists.” God gave people purpose to be a therapist and to be in the mental health profession to help other people. A lot of people are put on this earth to help us in ways that we can’t help ourselves.”

Stephen Curry’s sister further added, “It’s really difficult for someone who’s actually been raised in the church and kind of been programmed to think that if you’re feeling depressed or anxious, you’re not praying enough. For me, it was very negative. I try to really make religion and my spiritual life my own and make everything positive. I have enough negative things going on in my head as it is. And so if I can use what I’ve been taught… to be a positive in my life rather than a negative one, that’s what I try to do.”

While many athletes get injured, the wounds and pain are not always internal, a lot of mental pressure is put on a person when he or she loses to do something they are good at and love for example Tracy McGrady whose career was over after his injury. With mental health becoming a priority in today’s society and rightfully so. It is great that the sibling of the Golden State Warriors star got the help she needed.
