“Have no regard whatsoever” Stephon Marbury’s $22,000 went in vain due to LeBron James and Team USA’s tardiness
LeBron James and Stephon Marbury
Stephon Marbury is back in the NBA headlines but he isn’t back in the league as he is cementing a legacy for himself in China by being the head coach of Beijing Royal Fighters. The reason for Stephon Marbury to be back on the heated-up discussion table is the worst 38 days of his life during the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. The 2004 squad never gets discussed enough compared to the Dream Team and also the Redeem Team. The reason is also pretty solid as they lost a couple of games unlike others and were limited to a Bronze medal only.
Stephon Marbury was on the roster and representing America in 2004. But he didn’t have a great start with the team. As LeBron James and Allen Iverson indirectly and unintentionally ruined his efforts. Stephon Marbury in 2020 gave a detailed experience of his time with the 2004 squad sitting alongside Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson and that video has resurfaced again. As it has many stories, especially around his interactions with Larry Brown. But most eyes and ears are interested more in his $22,000 which went in vain because of King James and A.I.
Stephon Marbury reveals how his $22,000 expense saved him from suspension unlike LeBron James and Allen Iverson
Stephon Marbury discussing the initial experience he had with coach Larry Brown where he got saved by thirty seconds quoted: “I had to fly to Florida for practice for the Olympics from Phoenix and I missed my flight to fly to Florida in the morning that USA Basketball got for me. So I had to spend $22,000 to get a private plane to make sure that I get there on the time. Because I didn’t want to call in and make a bad impression on USA Basketball… Cauz I knew them…it’s my mistake so I chartered a plane.”
Further Stephon Marbury added “It was the worst flight ever it was bumpy the all-time. I didn’t sleep one second on the flight…I get into the meeting room and I get there about thirty seconds before I was supposed to be inside the room… LeBron James and Allen Iverson they come about thirty seconds late… And Larry Brown of the jump he told those two guys, they were suspended playing in one game.”
Them showing up late and receiving just a one-game suspension for an exhibition game really made Stephon Marbury rethink his choices. As he spent $22,000 to be there on time and now that looked like not worth it. But again he didn’t do that to safeguard himself from receiving a suspension he did that to not make a bad impression on the team he knew for years. So that was a good choice but still, such stories bother one or the other day.
