The Golden State Warriors have been on top of the NBA for most of Steve Kerr’s tenure as head coach, winning four titles. But after this season’s mediocrity, their window of contention might be closing soon. Kerr could be looking for a fresh start with another team that has a brighter future.

That team could be the San Antonio Spurs, who won this year’s NBA Draft Lottery. They are projected to pick Victor Wembanyama, a 7-foot-3 phenom from France who has been hailed as the best prospect ever. Wembanyama has everything you want in a modern big man: he can shoot from deep, handle the ball, pass like a point guard and defend multiple positions. The talented young gun has drawn comparisons to LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Anthony Davis.

The Spurs also have one of Kerr’s mentors and friends, Gregg Popovich, who coached him to two championships as a player and hired him as an assistant coach. Popovich is 74 years old and might retire soon, possibly after coaching Team USA in the 2024 Olympics.

According to NBA insider Landon Buford, a source told him that Popovich might not stick around to coach Wembanyama and that he could pass the torch to Kerr, who would be a perfect fit for the Spurs’ culture and system.

Steve Kerr’s contract with the Warriors runs out after next season, and he has not talked about an extension yet. He might feel that he has accomplished everything he can with the Warriors and that it is time for a new challenge. He might also be attracted by the opportunity to coach Wembanyama, who could be a once-in-a-lifetime talent.

Buford’s source compared Kerr’s potential move to San Antonio to Phil Jackson’s move to Los Angeles Lakers in 1999. Jackson had won six titles with Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls before taking a year off and joining the Lakers, where he won three more rings with Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal and an additional two with Bryant leading.

The source suggested that Kerr could follow in Jackson’s footsteps and lead the Spurs to multiple titles with Wembanyama as his star. The source also said that he could see the Spurs winning a championship in the next five years under Kerr.

This is all hypothetical at this point, and there is no indication that Kerr will leave the Warriors. But it is a fascinating scenario that could change the balance of power in the NBA in the near future.
