Chris Paul who has been a strong rival for the Golden State Warriors throughout the decade is now a member of the Dub Nation. Last month the Warriors front-office acquired him from the Washington Wizards while exchanging Jordan Poole. It’s still hard to believe for many that Chris Paul has officially teamed up with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green under the system of HC Steve Kerr.
During CP3’s time with the Houston Rockets, he tried his best to defeat the Golden State Warriors and bag a championship or have better chances to do so. But unfortunately, that plan just didn’t age well and Chris is still ringless while his rivals have got the job done 4 times. During all those years of pure rivalry, Chris Paul made many moments while suiting up against the Golden State Warriors.
The most iconic one is his fake-laugh moment with Steve Kerr. In 2018 during a regular season game, Kerr joked about something to Chris Paul in a timeout. CP3 even laughed at first but as soon as Kerr turned the other way, the point god changed his face back to normal as he was just fake laughing at it. In 2020, reflecting on that moment during an IG Live, Paul said: “Why did I fake laugh at Steve Kerr? Because wasn’t sh*t funny.”
Now even Steve Kerr has addressed that iconic moment with the team’s latest member. The HC said: “I think we were joking about traveling. He was not joking. I was joking about traveling, but he didn’t want to have any part of it.” Further, Kerr even mentioned how their relationship of hate now is turned into love. As they aren’t competing on the floor but are teammates instead.
Chris Paul’s role under Steve Kerr’s system with the Golden State Warriors
Paul’s new role under the system of Steve Kerr hasn’t been clearly revealed yet. But as mentioned by many players and even the HC, CP3 is going to help the Dubs with more opportunities and options on the offensive of the floor. He can balance things when Stephen Curry isn’t on the floor and even help the Splash Brothers just like Draymond Green.
Steve Kerr talking about Chris Paul and their interaction quoted: “I watched Steph [Curry] and Chris work out together… And one of the things I love about Chris is that he controls games. And, so I told him we need his ability to control the game at key times for us and he knows he’s going to adapt to some of the stuff we do. Especially when he’s playing with Steph, throwing the ball ahead, playing with a little more pace.”
Chris Paul is also one of the best playmakers in the league’s history. He can dish out dimes anytime and make his teammates better. His pair with the Splash Brothers can destroy the opponents on the offensive end. As the best defender on the other end won’t be able to guard all three of them. He can also help the Dubs by mentoring their young core and becoming a strong voice in the locker room.
