Steve Kerr, who was recently appointed as the head coach of the Men’s Basketball USA National Team, talked to Tim Bontemps of ESPN. In the conversation, Kerr talks about the possibility of newer teams being added to the league and how both the viewership and the popularity of the league might skyrocket post the additions.
Talks have been going on for a long time about expanding the league. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, when asked about the expansion of the league, hinted that it’s just around the corner and that Las Vegas and Seattle are the most probable location that will get franchises to their name. When asked about the same, Kerr had some interesting admissions to make. Kerr said, “It feels right. It’s not my department, but Vegas and Seattle seem to be such smart franchises.“
Explaining why the two locations are prime targets for the next team, he talked about the league needing Western Time Zone teams. He talked about the possibility of doubleheaders on TV and also about the location of the two places.
Kerr continued, “You factor in Vegas for the time slot. But also just how great of a venue this is for summer league, USA basketball. The fans here have proven they’ll come out.” Vegas in particular, according to him, will be a money machine as people will chime in huge numbers to support their team.

Steve Kerr head coaching the USA team for the 2023 World Cup

When Steve Kerr was announced as the head coach of the National team in December 2021, there was a lot of excitement around the news. He too, was “excited and honored” to join the coaching staff and was thrilled to represent the country. He has a big job too, taking away the championship back to his country from defending champions, Spain.
The team being taken there is a very inexperienced one with Bobby Portis and Josh Hart, both 28, being the oldest people in the squad. They have very little experience and none of them have participated in any World Cup or Olympics before. Due to the changes in rules from the NBA, experience becomes important. Recently too, team USA lost a scrimmage to a “Select Team”.
Despite all this, Kerr doesn’t seem to be worried, “It’s a time-honored tradition of USA Basketball. You want to get great talent to come in and challenge you and that’s what the Select team did.” Now, that’s an innovative way to spin off a loss.
As the USA team makes its preparations for the world cup, Steve Kerr will be looking to win the World Cup for his country this time. The tournament starts on 26 August for team USA as they play against New Zealand in their first game at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, Philippines.
