The NBA was gutted by the tragic events that took place two days ago at Uvalde, Texas. The fact that there were three shootings in a span of two weeks during this month has shocked the entire nation bringing everybody to their lowest. The 18-year-old Texan gunman had killed 19 students and two teachers at Robb Elementary School.
The suspect was approached and killed by the Border Patrol team after almost an hour-long standoff with law enforcement officers. Salvador Ramos was the suspect identified who used two AR-15-style rifles. These weapons were purchased shortly after he turned 18 which his grandfather told the police he had no idea of. Ramos had also killed his grandmother that morning before carrying his antics to the school.
Steve Kerr gets emotional about the Uvalde School Shooting
Steve Kerr has often shown his frustrations against the government in times as such. Before the Golden State Warriors vs Dallas Mavericks game had kicked off, the former NBA head coach of the year was in no mood of answering the press on anything basketball-related. He quickly lashed out at senators of states saying that they are holding their citizens, hostage, by not voting in on gun laws.
“I’m so tired of getting up here and offering condolences to the devastated families that are out there. I’m tired of the moments of silence. Enough! There’s fifty senators right now who refuse to vote on H.R.8, which is a background-check rule that the House passed a couple of years ago. It’s been sitting there for two years. And there’s a reason they won’t vote on it: to hold onto power,” he said.
He further said, “We can’t get numb to this…. Do you realise 90% of Americans, regardless of political party, want background check, universal background check. 90% of us! We are being held hostage by fifty senators in Washington who refuse to put it to a vote, despite what we the American people want.” Kerr stormed out of the room right after he concluded his message. The reason why Kerr was so frustrated was that he was a close victim of such violence himself, his father was assissinated.
NBA reacts to Uvalde School Shooting
The shooting rattled many across the world especially people within the United State. NBA legend Charles Barkley had also spoken about the incident questioning the safety of school-going children saying it was never something to be worried about back in the day. Several other players and celebrities reacted showing their emotions towards the shooting.
Hollywood Pop sensation Taylor Swift retweeted Kerr’s emotional message saying, “Filled with rage and grief, and so broken by the murders in Uvalde. By Buffalo, Laguna Woods, and so many others. By the ways in which we, as a nation, have become conditioned to unfathomable and unbearable heartbreak. Steve’s words ring so true and cut so deep.”
