Houston Rockets star Dillon Brooks spoke up about the incident involving his head coach Ime Udoka and LeBron James. Brooks has been known to have beef with LeBron James over the past.
But this time, he knew the situation was different. Brooks knew that the altercation between his head coach and James would only go on to be worse. So, Brooks says when speaking with Michael Shapiro of the Chron;
I tried to push LeBron away from it. The refs just let it get out of hand. A terrible group out there that was reffing, and they lost control of the game, and it was very inconsistent.
Dillon Brooks mentions that despite LeBron James and Ime Udoka jawing at each other for a while, the referees waited till it got worse to issue technical fouls to both of them. Brooks does appear to push James away to protect his head coach.
Brooks is loyal to his head coach and his team. He defends his head coach as he continues;
[Udoka] doesn’t back down from anybody. He’s played the game before. … With our culture, standing up for us is a big thing.
His opinion on standing up for his head coach is as he sees his head coach get ejected for standing up for the team.
Dillon Brooks and his history with LeBron James
Dillon Brooks has antagonized LeBron James before during the Western Conference 2nd round playoffs last year. He claimed that LeBron was old and could not do anything against them. LeBron James and his Lakers went on to win the round and advance to the Western Conference finals at the expense of Brooks and the Memphis Grizzlies.
Fans and media claimed that Brooks had ‘Poked the Bear’ when he tried to get in James’ crosshairs. Brooks went on to have a poor performance throughout the series and James dominated Brooks.

Brooks on Ime Udoka’s spat with LeBron and the subsequent ejection:
“Terrible group out there that was reffing, they lost control of the game. …That’s what you get from inconsistent refs is a whole bunch of nonsense.” pic.twitter.com/2T2uWpE8OB
But in this instance, Brooks did something intelligent. He knew things were going south and wanted to stop it before it went worse. But Udoka and James kept at it.
