“They do it in a collective way”, Zion Williamson on the Memphis Grizzlies being the best trash talkers in the NBA
Zion Williamson calls out the entire Memphis Grizzlies team when asked about the best trash talker in the league
Memphis Grizzlies
The Memphis Grizzlies have been talking trash ever since they made the playoffs in 2021. Led by a core of Ja Morant and Dillion Brooks you can never go wrong. These two guys seem to have spread this mentality onto the rest of the squad as Zion Williamson believes they do it the best. When asked about the best trash talker in the NBA Zion replied, “The entire Memphis Grizzlies team, they do it in like a collective way, you can’t help but respect it.”
Ja Morant famously said, “We’re fine in the west,” when referring to his competition this season. The Grizzlies have since gone on a 6 game skid to Western conference opponents including two losses to Golden State and multiple on national television. Memphis were mercilessly trolled on social media for their performances. Memphis, however, is still the #2 seed in the West and has a good shot at the conference finals.
Zion on the other hand is with the Pelicans who sit in the 7th seed in the West. As it stands it is a play-in spot but securing 7 seed would mean a first-round matchup against Memphis. Zion will certainly talk back to them in the playoffs as the stakes are much higher. Memphis has only won one playoff series so far with this new team. If Zion can get back to fitness before the postseason the Pelicans can be a legitimate threat in the West.

Memphis Grizzlies used to be successful trash talkers
Ja Morant and his band of trash talkers are not the first people to do it in Memphis. From 2011-2015 the Memphis Grizzlies adopted the tag of ‘Grit n Grind’ for their defensive-oriented and considerably successful team. With defense always comes trash talk and these Grizzlies were all about it. The Grizzlies back then made 2 conference semi-finals and a conference final in 5 years talking trash all the way.
Although they did not have a superstar like Ja back then, they had big names for sure. The Grizzlies had 4 players averaging over 14 points per game Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol, and Mike Conley. This team at its peak beat the ‘Lob City’ Clippers with Blake Griffin and Chris Paul in the first round. Memphis had an iconic era back then which will forever be remembered in NBA history.
Current-day Memphis Grizzlies do have a chance at a successful future. Their core is young and they have a superstar, they just need some playoff experience which they got last year. Once the wins come the confidence will increase and this year Memphis will be high on confidence as the #2 seed. Their path to the finals will not be easy with KD and the Suns as well as Luka and Kyrie in Dallas. If Memphis does manage to go far in these playoffs, Ja can truly say they are fine in the west.
