“They’re really sick of it” Former Celtics star Enes Freedom on Turkish government placing a $500k bounty on him
Enes Freedom
In the 2011 NBA Draft, Enes Freedom was selected third and played for 11 seasons. The 30-year-career old’s averages are 11.2 points and 7.8 rebounds, and he has represented five different teams. Enes Freedom was a rather good NBA big man throughout his career, but it is not what he is best known for. He is frequently brought up these days because he changed his name. He was first known as Enes Kanter.
During the 2021–22 season, Enes Freedom took the decision to change his name. He took on the new last name after becoming a citizen of the United States. Enes discussed his decision to alter his name to Freedom during an interview. He explained that it represents his early-life struggle for freedom.
He said, “Here (in the U.S.), there is freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of expression, freedom of the press,” he said. “I didn’t have any of those with Turkey.” Enes Freedom has moved around a lot throughout his life. Although his parents were Turkish, he was actually born in Switzerland. He was born in Turkey and raised there after that. The future NBA center then immigrated to the United States as a teenager.
Freedom is a free agent at the moment. He is, however, not too far from being out of the league. Last season, the seasoned big man last competed for the Boston Celtics. Freedom participated in 35 games and recorded a 3.7-point and 4.6 rebound average.
Why does Enes Freedom have a $500k bounty on his head
The former NBA center has a bounty placed on him by the Turkish government worth up to 10 million Turkish lira, or over $500,000, for information leading to his capture. Freedom is listed as one of the nation’s top 20 most-wanted terrorists for 2023 because of his well-known outspokenness over the government of Erdogan’s Turkey’s violations of human rights.
Speaking to the New York Post he said, “Before the bounty, Turkish intelligence were after the people on the list, but now everyone is after them because they want the money, They’re really sick of it, and they said ‘enough is enough’ and are doing whatever they can to shut me up.”
Freedom, who now resides in Washington, DC, acknowledged that the bounty increases his personal security worries, but he insisted that he is in frequent communication with both the FBI and the local police.
