The controversy surrounding Angel Reese continues to live on. After the LSU forwards ‘You can’t see me gestures went viral over social media, basketball fans cannot keep from talking about her. Reese was first slammed for her ‘classless’ behavior against Iowa’s Caitlin Clark. Soon, the young forward would take to Twitter to call out the First Lady, Jill Biden, for inviting the runners-ups to the White House along with the champions.
Jill Biden had publicly announced that she would love to host both Iowa and LSU following the NCAA finals. A decision, she said, that was made to honor the sporting spirits of both sides. This, however, did not go sit well with Reese, who called it ‘A Joke.’ Twitter, too, reacted to this decision and called it ‘white pacifist’ that had a ‘racist undertone.’ Stephen A. Smith (the reputed sports journalist) also called Reese’s criticism a ‘white-black issue’.
After Reese’s comments, President Joe Biden downplayed the First Lady’s public announcement saying he was looking forward to hosting both LSU and UConn. The NCAA women’s and Men’s champions. However, after expressing their displeasure over Jill Biden’s comments, LSU declined their invitation to the White House. Reese spoke on the I am Athlete podcast and said, “If we were to lose, we would not be invited to the White House.”
“You are women at the end of the day. You should be standing behind us before anything,” Reese said, talking about how much it bothered her. “It’s hard to see things like that and not comment back on it,” she said. The forward also spoke on how she feels about the Bidens’ apology on the matter. “I’m not gonna lie to you I don’t accept that apology,” she said. “You can’t go back on certain things you say,”
Do Twitter and the rest of social media agree with Reese’s views?
After Reese’s recent criticism of the President and the First Lady, many have come out and shown minimal sympathy. Some have even said that the LSU player has been pulling such issues ‘out of the pocket’ and is ‘being extra’.
Amidst all the backlash from Twitter, Reese has expressed that she has no problem in missing out on the White House invitation. Joking about how they can go to the Obama’s, she said that Iowa can have their moment with the President since they believed they deserved to be called. “You felt like they should’ve came because of sportsmanship right? They can have that spotlight,” she said. “We’ll go to the Obamas. I’ll see Michelle. I’ll see Barack.” she concluded jokingly.
