Throughout the history of sports, every type of sport has had its fair share of greats. Debates were originally confined to who the greatest player was in a particular sport. However, a new topic of debate emerged. It asked the question, who is the greatest athlete across all the categories of sports? Skip Bayles believes it might be NFL superstar Tom Brady.
On the talk show Undisputed, Bayless has posed the question, “Will Patrick Mahomes ever eclipse Tom Brady in terms of greatness?” For some background, Mahomes, 28, is one of the NFL’s biggest stars and is considered the face of the league. To some, it is not unimaginable that one day, Mahomes might surpass who many consider the current greatest NFL player, Tom Brady. Skip Bayless disagrees. He believes that what sets Brady apart from the rest is his clutch factor. The ability to turn a game on its head in the last moments. The ability to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. According to Bayless, Brady is even better than Michael Jordan, considered the most clutch player in NBA history, in this aspect.
Bayless was quoted saying, “No shot…Tom Brady’s clutchness eclipses Michael Jordan’s,” when asked to compare the two.
Bayless feels that Mahomes, while undoubtedly being a great young player, will find it difficult to replicate Brady’s success. The head on record between the two does little to dispel any confusion on the status of their greatness. They have faced each other 6 times throughout the years. Both have won 3 games each. Regardless , Mahomes is still only 28, and has enough time left to sway the opinion of fans in his favour for the G.O.A.T. debate.
How clutch was Michael Jordan
It would be wrong to invalidate Jordan’s clutch ability simply because of Bayless’s comments. Michael Jordan was one of the most clutch players to ever step foot on the basketball court. If you were in the last seconds of the fourth quarter with the game on the line, Jordan was your man.
One of his most iconic moments came on May 7, 1989. The Chicago Bulls were facing the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs. Leading up to Game 5, the Bulls were leading 3-1. In Game 5, with the series on the line, the Cavaliers put up a fight. As they headed into the last few seconds of the fourth, the Cavaliers were leading 100-99, with the Bulls inbounding.
With the game on the line, Jordan got the ball and jumped for a shot attempt. To the spectators, it appeared Jordan hung in the air, waiting for the trailing defender, who had jumped to contest the shot, to return to the ground before hitting the shot to win the game for the Bulls.
This shot cemented Jordan as one of the most clutch players in the league early into his career. Many more moments like these were to follow, but fans often like to consider this as the point where the league was put on notice of Jordan’s blazing greatness.
